Crystal Castles is the debut studio album by Canadian electronic music duo Crystal Castles; at the time of its release, the group consisted of producer Ethan Kath and singer Alice Glass.
The two met each other in 2004 and both had an interest in noise music acts like AIDS Wolf.
In making their music, the duo mainly focused on how "abrasive" noise music was; as Glass explained, "annoying people still evokes an emotion in them.
When you hear a bunch of crazy sounds you're gonna feel something." In analyzing how this relates the music that appears on their self-titled debut album, Edgar Smith of Time Out London wrote that the meaning of the tracks come from their "splintered melod[ies] and melancholic drum-loops" and not from their incomprehensible vocals and lyrics.
Later in the year Lies Records collected most of the vinyl singles and released them on CD and 12" vinyl for the first time, along with many previously unreleased tracks and three songs recorded just for the collection which made their debut album.
As Kath had declared, some of the tracks, including "XXZXCUZX ME", were deliberately designed to be grating.
In February 2008, Kath said his aim was to "..the most annoying sounds ever [for Alice to] scream over and then we’ll try to open for Melt Banana".Glass announced her departure from the band in October 2014, citing personal and professional reasons. This resulted in the track "Alice Practice", which was initially shelved for six months but garnered much attention when finally posted online.Their third album, (III), was released on November 12, 2012 and was the number one album of 2012 on Tumblr and Hype Machine. The album included four singles: "Plague", "Wrath of God", "Sad Eyes" and "Affection".
